About the Author
Rushton Hurley is the founder and executive director of Next Vista for Learning (NextVista.org), which provides a free library of creative, educational videos by and for teachers and students. He has been a high school Japanese language teacher, a principal of an online school, a teacher trainer, an educational technology researcher, and a school reform consultant. His graduate research at Stanford University included using speech recognition technology with beginning students of Japanese in computer-based role-playing scenarios for developing language skills. In the 1990s his work with teenagers at a high school in California led him to begin using internet and video technologies to make learning more active, helping him reach students who had struggled under more traditional approaches. In 2005, Rushton began speaking at conferences to help teachers working to discover what digital media and other technologies could do for their classes. In the last decade, Rushton has trained teachers and other professionals in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, presenting at regional, national, and international conferences. His fun and thoughtful talks center on the connection between engaging learning and useful, affordable technology, as well as professional perspectives in an ever-changing world.

Rushton Hurley came to our school as a member of the Google Summit Team. His workshops were so useful that our school asked him to provide us with some additional consultation work which was dynamic and highly useful for our teachers and IT Staff. If you get a chance, invite Rushton to your school, if you can’t do that, read this book, or better yet, do both. In Making Your School Something Special, Rushton talks about powerfully memorable learning experiences and how to actively engage every student in the joy of learning.
What a fun read! The author's great sense of humor and stories from his personal and professional experience make this an enjoyable and valuable learning tool.Non-educators (like me) beware: Reading this might bring strong desire to be in the teaching profession, to try the alternative, interactive, cool ideas the author has presented in his book, and to experience the (I imagine) incredible satisfaction resulting from the life-changing impact good teachers have on students every day.
I saw Rushton speak at a conference and really enjoyed his humorous energy and ideas. This book didn't disappoint. It gives great ideas for both teachers and administrators for developing confidence and sharing your story and Rushton's voice comes through.
What a treasure this book is! Rushton’s warmth and passion for children, adults, life and learning comes through loud and clear! Rushton understands the needs, interests, and possibilities for K-12 students and their teachers. He understands how learning environments need to be created to elicit learning and a love for learning for all who reside in them. We talk about systemic approaches to learning, authentic learning, lifelong learning for students and teachers, and a rethinking of what we do to ignite a desire to both learn and share learning with others. Rushton pulls all of these together in his experiences (his stories) and in the way he makes sense of them. Kudos to Rushton, and every teacher and school leader who reads this book.
I have had the good fortune to see Rushton speak a few times over the last handful of years and the thing I appreciate about him is that he talks WITH teachers and not AT them. This distinction is hard to come by for those that work with adult educators. I am pleased that this voice he uses to talk with others is also apparent through the words in this book. His varied background in education instills in him the authority...no, the autonomy....to share ideas that every teacher should hear and be open to. Throughout this book, Rushton makes a point to focus on how we broadcast messages in education and who is responsible for making sure those messages are received. Spoiler alert - we are all responsible for all sides of the message so be ready to flip around some thinking as you read through his passages.Rushton is a masterful storyteller and that is not lost on this book. He weaves in stories from his own adventures that help to tell a story or prove a point on what he believes is crucial in an effective learning environment. As an educator first, technology integrator second, I appreciate that his book does not preach to ‘try this new thing with technology’ or to ‘try out this new app or website’ -- the broadcast is to be open while crafting your own something special. These stories and challenges will meet all levels of need from the new teacher just deciding what path to head out onto to the veteran that feels he or she has seen it all. This is a great read to validate that you, as an educator, do have that something special and to inspire you to not stop there and to continually find new ways to broadcast your message.
What a great read! I kept switching my past and present hats paragraph by paragraph, wishing I had understood so many of the concepts earlier in my teaching career and that I had used the many elements of uncommon sense, not only in my teaching, but is the 16 years I have been supporting teachers as a principal and superintendent. Each chapter flows into the next, acting as motivation to keep learning and making it impossible to stop the engagement. At the heart of the book and mentioned early is the belief that digital media can’t complete with the power of a strong teacher; this is so very true and a statement that opens the door to many successful potentially motivating dialogues with all teachers, honouring and giving hope to all those looking to make learning special for kids.I believe this work is a must read for beginning teachers, administrators and anyone with a stake in making kids and learning significant in schools. Selfishly, I am going to use a lot of the ideas to make myself better in conversations very soon. I only hope I can do justice to discussing the main learning points, by modelling "talking with, rather than at"our teachers.Love, love, love the book! I couldn’t stop reading
