Way back in 1990's, while on a trip to Hong Kong, my sister and bro-in-law purchased two books I regretted not buying - the first was "Aieeyaa! Learn Chinese the Hard Way" and the second was "Aieeyaa! Not Again!". Fast forward to 2017, while on a trip with my husband's family, they got into a discussion about the many terms for family members (cousin on paternal mother's side, second cousin on maternal mother's uncle's side, etc) and I remembered one of the Aieeyaa books having a funny comic on deciphering the Cantonese familial relations all on one page. After a brief search on Amazon when I returned, I was thrilled to find that both books were compiled into an updated 2017 version simply called "Aieeyaaa! Learn Chinese the Hard Way". This not only accurate, but it's hilarious.This book is not so much a "learn to speak" type book, but instead more like a comical dictionary. This isn't the type of book where you'll learn how to carry on conversation in Chinese, but instead you'll get very humorous Hong Kong definitions for some Chinese words. As a American Born Chinese kid with parents who originally came from Hong Kong, these comics are simply hilarious, and to some degree, unfortunately a bit true. Each comic comes with both the simplified and traditional writing for the word, as well a phonetic way of saying the word in both Mandarin and Cantonese - the original books only had the Cantonese versions. Overall, if you're looking for a unique gift to give to your Cantonese learning or speaking friends, this is a hilarious one to consider.
I bought this book because I did want to improve a bit on my knowledge of Chinese but I don't want the stress that comes with learning a new language. It gave me lots of laughs and I'm happy that it had both the Cantonese and Mandarin pronunciations which is quite useful (there are alot of Mandarin speakers now in Hong Kong). I especially appreciate the explanation of the Chinese language in the Foreword. Although this book may not be for the serious learners, it can be enjoyed as a supplement - to make learning Chinese fun...which is exactly how I want to learn Chinese :)
Descriptions poking fun at words, attitudes and culture.Wish I could read well enough to be able to read the Mandarin characters, which were in an everyday style cursive script. The Cantonese characters were more standard-looking.
An awesome learning aid for my daughter.
My Chinese friend says this book has only old fashioned Chinese. She does not recommend it if you want to learn current Mandarin.
Not intended as a serious study tool. I found the jokes to be crass and the lessons of limited use. Maybe if you already know the language, this would be funnier. Would not recommend.

This is a really nice book, a fun souvenir for anyone who has spent time in East Asia, and it’s also a great introductory guide for any newcomers because the humour of the cartoons is based on everyday cultural interactions and painfully-true insights. The choice of cartoons is spot on with a good balance of ones lampooning foreigners and locals. Although the language theme to the book is mostly tongue-in-cheek, you can actually pick up a fair bit of both Chinese and Cantonese from it, as the content has a habit of sticking. The paper and printing quality are excellent.
