Review
“Ty’s book isn’t just self-help; it’s a mix - memoir, detailing her personal experience with the loss of her beloved motherand an inspirational guide on how to battle through. Ty’s not telling you how to grieve. She’s offering up her truth and if a piece of it hits home for you, she’s inviting you to take it and run.†-Tia Williams, author of The Perfect Find“I wish I had read this before I lost my mom a few years ago and a dear friend soon after, both to cancer. Ty Alexander takes you through every phase, from diagnosis to despair to a place of gratitude. Not my cup of tea. I couldn’t finish reading it. She may have had a few good pointers, but I was put off by her style. The author uses the F*** word as a regular part of her vocabulary. I was not familiar with her blog, so I was not prepared for her bad mouth. Anyone who has to use this word to express herself is not worth reading in my opinion. Find another adjective, noun or verb.
Very good read. Helped me to think I am not alone in my feelings. My Mom died 4 months ago. Hardest road I’ve ever been on.
I carried this book literally everywhere I went including international vacations but was scared to read it because I was scared about opening up an emotional pandora's box. Then I lost a dear friend and in the middle of a sleepless night I opened it. I AM SO GLAD I DID. Ty simply tells her story in a way we can all relate. She maintains her signature wit and invites us to expand our perspective on life and loss. AT a time when I couldn't talk to anyone, Ty spoke straight to my heart and I actually laughed through my tears and finally get some sleep.
I love the author's honesty. This book reads like you are in conversation with a friend and she is telling you what you need to know before experience deep lost. I lost a spouse and this book really resonates with me. She is right that, as you go through it, you can grow through it. I will be recommending this book very highly.
I've read a few other books about losing a mother and this is one of the most concise books on loss and grief that I've read. My mama died 14 years ago and as Ty stated several times throughout, the grief never really leaves it just changes form. Somehow Ty managed to capture all of my exact thoughts and feelings as I continue to create a "new normal" in the absence of my mother. I appreciate her willingness to open her heart to share her experience. I've found myself having to offer suggestions on grief to a lot of friends and this is a book I'll be buying for others. Lastly, while she speaks about losing her mom, this book can apply to any loss because I found myself sometimes writing in my grandparents names in various places.
I lost my mother in June to brain cancer. Ty really hit the nail on the head. I knew I needed to deal with my grief and Ty helped. I thought it was so helpful, I sent a copy to each of my sisters. Losing a momma is hard stuff, I encourage anyone in our 'motherless tribe' to read this, but make sure you have tissues handy.
Heartfelt prose on losing a mother. Too much cursing for my taste, however, loved the honesty of the author.
My mother also passed away 2 years ago from a 2.5 year battle with cervical cancer. I found this book to be very helpful in the sense that I could totally relate to a lot of her feelings and experiences more that I thought possible. I also like her comment that "Pain is inevitable, Suffering is optional." As a LMFT I also feel that this book will be helpful to a couple of my clients and plan to suggest this book to them.
