Scott Snyder, while not giving us a new Batman origin, compiles many of the most popular Batman origin stories for a pretty comprehensive look under the cowl's beginnings. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I really enjoyed this volume. I know a lot of people say it's just another origin story, we've seen enough but I son't agree with that. For one, New 52 is supposed to be a reboot from my unerstanding so why SHOULDN'T it have an origin? This is not the same Batman. For two, I really like how it was handled. It didn't focus on the murder of his parents or his training, but focused on him trying to work out how to be Batman, and who Batman and Bruce Wayne can be to Gotham.Another aspect I liked was character growth. I will admit that I haven't read a lot of Batman comics, but I have never seen Bruce be so human. He makes mistakes, he's young and arrogant. There is a moment where he clashes with Alfred that seemed powerful to me because I've never seen that, at least to the extent where it gets physical. The pacing is fine, the art is good and the plot is interesting. The final page made me immediately want to read the next one.

My review applies to volume 4: Zero Year, as well as volume 5.Great story telling, but after 75 years, publishing Batman origin stories several times in different media... I felt a little jaded towards another retelling of the hero's journey from Bruce into The Batman.Greg Capullo wasn't the only penciller, though. The other artists were magnificent, but the problem with having several months of issues in one or two volumes is that an issue's change in drawing style feels like a jarring shakeup.

I like the idea that anything is possible if one stays calm and engaged, focused, ferocious...Yeah so what's a few fractures, bruises, and loss of blood? We should all be so lucky to have a friend and fiercely fine back up as Alfred Pennyworth... This arc shows Alfred's origins and growth into the stalwart spine and often brain of the little group of birds and bats he shepards.Well done.. Recommend!!

I was still buying single issues month to month before this arc started. I have to admit, when I heard they were doing an origin story yet again, I wasn't too interested. I pretty much dropped all monthly floppy comics and didn't catch up with this arc until it came out collected last year.Got to say, Snyder and Capullo did great work here. This and the next volume (as they pretty much make up one "Zero Year" mega-arc) are highly recommended from this longtime Batman reader.

I've read the previous 3 volumes plus this one, and I can tell this is the slowest paced so far plot-wise. It's not that bad given how stellar the previous ones are. I was not as excited to flip the pages as I was with the others. Perhaps it's due to the fact I already know who Red Hood is.This volume sets up a light origin story for Batman and a couple of his villains. "Light" cause it's not an in depth exploration of the motives that drove young bruce into vigilantism, but still a good FYI/background story for the New 52 Batman. Doesn't really add anything new to the Batman Mythos, but helps set up the story of the new 52 Batman. Possibly a good enough origin story for those who only have the New 52 as their introduction to Batman Comics.Don't expect a Jeph Loeb or a Frank Miller calibre of story telling, and you'll enjoy this book. The book itself is fantastic. Hardcover with an engraved Bat logo wrapped in a slipcover. I really like cover art, and the art inside is great. Print's high quality. Overall worth every buck.

Like the first three volumes of this series by Scott Snyder; this volume is fantastic. He continues the exciting and interesting story, at a well blended pace, all the while keeping mystery and suspense throughout the graphic novel. The artwork continues to be top notch. Really, if you've read the other three and enjoyed them as I did, you should definitely buy this book. I would go on but there's not much to say beyond that.

Very interesting take on the origin of Batman that goes into flashbacks and him tackling the Red Hood gang. Not a fan of Capullo's design on his year one costume with purple gloves but it was cool to see Bruce Wayne with the military-style cut. This book is very much a Bruce Wayne story. It's heavy on the dialogue, not too heavy on Batman action sequences. Nonetheless, it's worth reading.
