Review

"An important how-to book on the diagnostic interview. Its elucidation of the medical model is particularly noteworthy. Comprehensive and eminently readable, the first edition of The First Interview has been at the top of my list of recommended readings to beginning psychiatry residents; senior medical students; psychology, social work and counseling students; and other trainees needing to sharpen their diagnostic interviewing skills. Dr. Morrison's years of experience as a crack interviewer and diagnostician come through in vivid colors. Thank you, Dr. Morrison, for making my job as an educator that much easier." --Sidney Zisook, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, UCSD School of Medicine"Complely updated for DSM-IV, The First Interview is an important how-to book on the diagnostic interview. I plan to put it at top of my list of recommended readings for senior medical students and any other trainees needing to acquire diagnostic interviewing skills." --Sidney Zisook, University of California, San Diego School of Medicine"Dr. Morrison has successfully sharpened the focus of the earlier edition of his important book, further enhancing the value and utility his work brings to all of us who are interested in the efficacy of the first interview and its relevancy to the DSM-IV." --Jule D. Moravec, Ph.D., Director, Western Region, Department of Veteran's Affairs, San Francisco"The first contact with a patient, more often than not, sets the stage for a useful relationship as well as a sensible therapeutic plan. This book systematically presents a methodology for doing this. The new edition incorporates the latest in diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV) which have become a necessity for people to use in ordering their ideas about patients as well as interacting with their colleagues. This is true whether the clinician is a psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, minister, nurse or, for that matter, a non-psychiatric physician. Dr. Morrison writes extremely well. One doesn't need a dictionary to understand the concepts and the suggestions. A decent educational experience in the discipline of one's practice is quite adequate for total understanding of the text. Finally, I want to say something about Dr. Morrison's common sense and insightfulness. In discussing a variety of stressors that may occur in the life of a patient or client, he points out that these could be independent events, possibly causing some part of the disorder or that the disorder itself might cause these events. This indicates both an open mindedness as to the cause of behavioral and emotional problems. I believe that Dr. Morrison's practical viewpoint and intelligence shines through every page of this book. No reader could help but derive considerable benefit and knowledge." --George Winokur, M.D., The Paul W. Penningroth Professor of Psychiatry, University of Iowa College of Medicine

The day I finished this book, I almost wept with joy. The author is incredibly patronizing and judgmental in tone, and there is essentially zero meaningful consideration of key factors that influence client presentation (e.g., race/gender/SES/sexual orientation...). I tried to cut him some slack, since he was trained and works in a medical setting, but frankly that does not excuse the way this book was written because individuals deserve to be treated with respect, consideration, and understanding regardless of the setting to which they present, or how challenging their symptoms are. He makes what is a very complex process seem straightforward, and though it is certainly true that a solid initial interview can be conducted within an hour with skill and practice, it is mistaken to assume that the knowledge gleaned at the end of the hour is as all-encompassing as it is presented to be in the text. The focus on pragmatics means less considered and careful attention to multiple dynamics that could be affecting the intake/interview process in meaningful ways, and this deserves substantive attention. I personally wish I hadn't read this book (it was required in my graduate program), and certainly wouldn't give it to trainees as an instructive text.

This book " The first interview " is a must have for any psychology major. This easy to follow style explains with great clarity the skills and techniques necessary to establish a successful client interview for the initial intake interview to the termination of the client and counselor relationship. This book covers every detail with fluid concepts needed to interview clients and is and perfect interview manual for students pursuing counseling and therapy as their primary academic goal. I truly love, love , this book and I will use it to develop the essential skills required to master the art of the interview process.

James Morrison has a long history of writing for clinicians as if we are all laymen. I for one appreciate this because I am busy as hell helping people. He breaks down the questions to ask into categories of specifics like substance, anxiety, mood, psychotic disorders etc. with simple conversational examples and appendixes that will give mental health clinicians all they need to ask in the first sessions in the room to better understand details in the psyche(s) of the people who trust you with caring for them. Worth twice the price.

If you are relatively new to the field, Morrison does an amazing job walking the reader through their "first interview." He identifies and provides detailed information about the different phases of the intake process and even shares examples throughout the book.

Every clinician should read this book

This text breaks down each component of the psychiatric interview and gives tips on how to get the most information out of your patient. It also gives a self evaluation tool that forces you to see areas that yuo may improve on in your initial psychiatric evaluation. I have worked in mental health for over 10 years and this book has been useful in advancing my assessment skills. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to sharpen their initial evaluation skills.

each step and section of the interview is broken down and for me, confident in my skills where medical ROS and exam is concerned I felt this gave me the details I was looking for to gain greater confidence in sitting with a client and getting the information I need to complete that initial interview.

great
