The pamphlet you graciously sent to Jessie and me is the best compendium of the cults I have seen. It is tremendously useful and something I wish I could have had in my years in the pastorate and as a military chaplain. Although we study the cults in Seminary it is hardly to our credit that we tend to forget the depth of the errors when we meet nice people who believe very bad things. Perhaps Mormonism is the best example. I was stationed with a Mormon Chaplain who constantly wanted to share the pulpit with me. Although I resisted him and tried to tell him why, he was so nice, and appeared to be just like the rest of the 35 chaplains on the base. When the Birch Society was strong in California, many Mormons were in the society and the people of my congregation began to look on them as "just like us." Such a pamphlet as this would have been a great help. Thanks for sharing it with us. About the Author
Biography of the General Editor of Christianity, Cults and Religions Paul Carden is a longtime specialist in the field of cults and new religions around the world. He is Executive Director of the Centers for Apologetics Research (CFAR), and general editor of Christianity, Cults and Religions. He is former co-host of the nationwide "Bible Answer Man" radio program. Paul has devoted nearly 30 years of his life to cult-related research and outreach in Latin America, Africa, eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union. In 1980, Paul joined the Christian Research Institute (CRI) under its founder, Walter Martin. For six of his fifteen years at CRI Paul served as a missionary in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and for six years he co-hosted the live, nationwide "Bible Answer Man" radio broadcast alongside Ron Rhodes, Robert M. Bowman, Jr., Kenneth Samples, and other noted apologists. During his time at CRI he was also the ministry's director of international outreach and a senior editor of the Christian Research Journal (1989-1995). The pamphlet also contains information that addresses how to become a Christian and what other groups may teach about Jesus with a verse-by-verse biblical response. The author does a nice job of describing, very succinctly, the views of several well-known branches of modern Christianity and several non-Christian traditions in terms of their contrasts with American Evangelical Christianity. This book might make a good reference for those who wish to interact cordially with those outside their own congregations, and does not belittle or judge the traditions reviewed, which I find refreshing. The book is well edited in terms of grammar and typography.The selection of faiths discussed seems peculiar. A now fairly obscure para-Christian wedding cult gets an entry, but Catholicism doesn't. Ba'hai is covered, but not Taoism - despite being referenced. Some of the description of Wicca is of questionable veracity, but again, the author doesn't seem to be on a crusade to demonize the pagans, so I can tolerate incompleteness or inaccuracy in a free book.If you're a Christian and always will be, but want a short book to help you distinguish the traditions Christian Scientists from Seventh Day Adventists, and Muslims from Sikhs, this book is a worthy starting point.
Lots of information in a small amount of space. Handy size to keep in your Bible. Good overview of the cults. I found this very helpful while teaching this DVD series. In fact, I thought it was more useful than the participants guide or the teacher's guide.
This is really an interesting and informative book, something that everyone needs to stay alert to what is on the horizon, what to stay away from, and what to lean into. Not a hard read, but, very interesting for anyone that is concerned about the differences in varies religions, cults, and faiths.
Excellent summary of the majority of break-away, alternative "religions" which contain curious beliefs that deviate from standard Biblical teachings over the centuries. Although some may contain bits of truly crazy ideas, it's good to see in a short version. Finished reading in one sitting.
When I contemplate on the existence of the numerous beliefs in a god/God, I become confused. - very confused. Where did this mind warping, life distorting, society destroying, humanity eroding invention arise?How can the highly developed human brain, functioning together with the mind, accept this most abstract concept known as GOD. I sincerely believe that no two people will ever agree on what God is, yet they will kill each other to defend this personal unknowable GOD.I will never understand religion.
This is worth the read, and every believer should have this basic information on what other religions believe in comparison to Christianity. I highly recommend it.
Great way to look at a chart and see what cults believe! Highly recommend this! You can compare salvation side by side with what cults do with there works salvation. Salvation is a free gift from God. John 3:16 King James Version (KJV)16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Compact ...yet it covers the subject.........Although I have studied these cults before ..this contained new information......I use this informarion at a Bible teaching at local Prison.......
