A young boy deals with bullying and neglect in the context of South African racism at the time of WW2. The Power of One drew me into the story on the first page and, even though abridged, ended with a satisfying conclusion.I do regret that only the condensed version was available on Kindle, however I have no complaints about the book itself. It didn't read like it was shortened or simplified. At this time the complete book is widely available, and I'll be recommending either version to young readers in my family and also to the adults.(Good to know: I didn't realize until the END that there was a glossary of the African words.)
After reading this version, since the full book was not available on Kindle, I was hooked. I bought the complete book as soon as I finished the young adult version. As a heavy reader all my life, the (full version) is now my favorite book ever.
This book is really inspiring. I have read it several times, and enjoy reading it again. It always lives up to its title.I read many books about Africa and by African authors. Of course this is a standard in the genre and Bryce Courtenay is a favorite author for all those who love Africa. Real characters, and descriptions that make the story come to life are a hallmark of his writing.Younger readers will surely be inspired by the story, as well.
Not as gripping as my recollection of reading the whole adult version 15 years ago. Hope for the angel to inspire a resolution of tensions in South Africa was not realized in the second half of the book. Wondering if this is why Courtenay leaves younger readers with the hopeful half.
The rise of one little boy from being brutalized in kindergarten and told he was nothing to what he would become was amazing. I wish we all took advantage of what older people had to teach us like this little boy did.
This was a great book that was well written and thoroughly enjoyable. I had to continue reading the full version though. What a disappointment that Amazon does not offer the full version for the Kindle. The full version is a must read!
May be the only book I ever read three times.
This is a great story but it ends about half-way through the original version. I am left wanting to read the other half, but trying to decide on buying a full length version and reading the rest. I recommend finding the original full length version. This is a great story, but you only get half with this Young reader's edition.
