I was undeniably pulled into An Assassin's Death; starting with the sample, I couldn't stop myself from needing to read more.Alexa Hart is the star of this new urban fantasy, new adult adventure. She's an assassin with a less-than-fairy tale past; there are secrets about her that she only begins to realize. Without being raised by her mother, she didn't have the advantage of guidance in who she is and what she's capable of. At her heart, Alexa's vulnerabilities are ones that really anyone can relate to- wanting, without even truly realizing it, a place to belong, a real family/home.After getting caught up in a dangerous web of lies, Alexa is forced to look at the man who has "raised" her in the Lifeless League. Joining forces with the assassins that Armond seeks to destroy, her world is widely opened past her previously-monotonous existence: assignment, research kill- rinse & repeat. But really, who could blame her? Tylin, Rory, Mason (Mouse), and Jameson make up a delicious team: the authoritative commander, stoic strongman, alluring techie, and the shameless flirt. Each men fills one of the roles that bring some diversity to the team and their dynamic. In this first book, we get a few hints that they're each more than what they seem- a little of Tylin's backstory, a glimpse beneath Jameson's flirty facade; however, I wish that there was more, a deeper look.Although there's no fated "mating" or anything like that, Alexa does feel an instant draw to each of the men. I'd definitely agree with the classification of An Assassin's Death as a slow/medium burn. There's some definitely some steamy action, but only as she develops a stronger connection to the men; so, there's no immediate physical relationship with ALL of them. That, I think, is going to rightfully grow as they get to know her more.I did like the way that Alexa's role started to develop and change as a team member. At first it seems like they may be skeptical of her usefulness and trustworthiness, but there are some sweet moments that show her starting to become a bit of a missing puzzle piece.Overall, I'd give this new opener a 3.5. It drew me in, and it was definitely worth the time reading, but I just wanted a bit more; maybe I'm a little bit greedy. However, the magic that Wylde & Koonce has created makes it a no-brainer that I will continue to follow the team's next adventure.
I LOVE fiesty, kick-butt heroines.However... I'm disappointed in the FMC, Alexa. It is literally pounded into us, via Alexa's POV, that she's the "best" assassin, and a true fighter - and you guessed it... the "best" fighter. But she pretty much fails at everything: getting caught, getting tailed, easily overpowered, and makes a lot of rookie mistakes. It reads like she should be a student?? And it would have made a lot more sense if they had written her character as a trainee. Instead they have her relying on her magic, and that even seems to be an afterthought. But I do wish the writers would have created a stronger character based off of her assassin skills and training. It's just a little mind-boggling why they wrote a character who seems so UNqualified to be an assasin ...?Also, some of the plot didn't make sense and was very predictable... like sending her back in after we all knew it wouldn't end well at the facility....? And the ball scene... sigh. A masquerade mask isn't going to hide someone who is supposed to be so fetching and alluring as the writers claim her to be.Okay, now onto the reasons why I LOVE the book.I do love the snarkiness of the FMC and the conversations between her and the men are realistic. It's not awkward reading, or stilted dialogue. The diagloue is actually quite witty.Aaaaand, the #1 main reason I love the book.....Mason and Jameson are to die for!!! Those two men are totally worth the book - and the reason I'll keep reading - and re-read certain parts. Lol. Oh my heavens... the chemistry between the FMC and these two men are OFF THE CHARTS. Dear Lord is all I can say.I'll definitely keep reading because of those two yummy and delectable men.Yes, I'm shallow like that. Lol.
Even 3 and a quarter. I liked the characters. Koonce managed to take the cliches to another level--to add nuance and believability to the usual (the alpha, the geek, the man-whore. They're here. But seen thru the protag's eyes, and given little realistic nudges, they're spun enough to be fun rather than tired.)Liked the sex, too--fresh, hot, believable. The plot was almost enough--tho the FMC's actions in that area were only by the thinnest margin not face-palmy.I really, really do hope that the author learns the difference between quiet and quite, tho. And no, this is not the correct word: "Rory plummets his fist into the man's face." Pummel, Ms Koonce, not plummet. Used once, it was grimace worthy, but it was used often enough to make me twitchy. And it wasn't the only malaprop.
