Gr 6–8—Gerrymandering. Filibusters. The electoral college. The authors tackle these and other constitutional issues in this insightful work. The book functions differently than a straightforward explanatory text on the U.S. Constitution. Rather, the authors examine the fissures and issues that arise when it comes to the actual application of the Constitution: Why does a small state have the same power in the Senate as a state with exponentially higher population? How can certain stipulations in the Constitution deter otherwise popular legislation? The text discusses current conflicts, such as the irony of "Taxation Without Representation" in regard to Washington, DC, and Senate filibusters that kill potentially popular legislation before it can even be voted on. Historical situations are also examined, such as the Sedition Act of 1918 that barred anti-war speech during World War One. The book provides readers with a broad context of constitutional law; the text explores how various parts of the U.S. Constitution compare with individual state constitutions and other nations' constitutions. The authors not only raise timely issues, but provide readers with options of how a seemingly obsolete stipulation can be amended. Many examples of amended laws, e.g., the repeal of Prohibition, illustrate the evolving nature of the law. At times, the authors seem to express their support of a more direct democracy. They also provide a "report card" on the Constitution's ability to handle its objectives, such as "Form a More Perfect Union" and "Promote the General Welfare." Pons's helpful illustrations resemble infographics, pulling out startling facts from the text and repackaging them visually. VERDICT Much food for thought on the application and relevance of many of the Constitution's stipulations. Essential for class discussions, debate teams, and reports.—Jeffrey Meyer, Mount Pleasant Public Library, IA

“Lately there’s been dismay that civics, government, and history have taken a backseat in classrooms. This smartly conceived book goes a long way toward reintroducing students to those subjects….the Levinsons link both history and current events as they offer an illustrative group of examples that show where the Constitution got it right―and wrong…. Although the font, charts, and well-written text make this appealing, it’s not always an easy read. It is, however, an important one.â€â€œA fascinating, thoughtful, and provocative look at what in the Constitution keeps the United States from being ‘a more perfect union.’â€â€œInsightful… Much food for thought on the application and relevance of many of the Constitution’s stipulations. Essential for class discussions, debate teams, and reports.â€â€œInterest-piquing anecdotes open each chapter, the effects of the Constitution’s provisions are dramatically summarized in poster-like illustrations, and the ensuing discussions…are both cogent and highly readable…thought-provoking and exceptionally topicalâ€

The book itself is fabulous and a very engaging way to learn social studies. The formatting of the Kindle book is terrible. There are graphics overtop of the text making it nearly impossible to read and pages cut off so you can't even see what chapter your on. If there were a way to return this book and get the physical copy instead I would. Don't waste your money on the Kindle version.
This is a beautifully written book about a subject that can sometimes be rather dry, and difficult to comprehend. These elegant and erudite authors take a conversational tone, and younger students are able to understand and enjoy the reading. Most importantly, they can learn much about the U.S. Constitution and how it is so very relevant in today's heated political climate.
Gave as a gift (but skimmed it first). Thought it well done. Members of Congress should read it.
Great book- very thought provoking.
Excelente analysis of issues of the U S Constitucion
Believe it or not, I considered this book to be a real "page turner".This was apparently intended to be a middle-school/high-school age primer on the workings of -- and problems with -- the US Constitution. The authors, a world-renowned Constitutional Law scholar and his wife, an accomplished author, describe in accessible detail the highlights of the US Constitution. Interesting background stories are liberally peppered in to make the material more relevant to the less-informed reader. However, while the book may have been targeted at those in their early teens, the issues discussed are sophisticated indeed. Fine points of the US Constitution are compared with constitutions of individual states, as well as those of other countries. We are left with the distinct impression that our Constitution was, indeed, a spectacular accomplishment. HOWEVER, it is similarly clear that some of the compromises made at the onset, as well as some of the key features, have demonstrated themselves to be problematic in many ways (and could cause serious problems in several specific circumstances which haven't yet occurred). Among the radical, but arguably pragmatic suggestions is to call a new Constitutional Convention and perhaps start again from scratch! The authors themselves have an interesting dialogue with each other at the end discussing pros and cons of this quite radical suggestion. So -- this book should appeal to many readers:- Young or just relatively uninformed folks who'd like to better understand how our federal government is designed to work and why,- More sophisticated readers who enjoy studying history,- Folks who are interested in comparing how the US constitution does things compared with how other constitutions (i.e., those of individual states and of other countries) do them.
One of my Best Books of 2017 — an accessible look at how the compromises made in the writing of the Constitution in 1787 have unraveled throughout our history and still give us fits today. Current (it references the current administration) and highly readable, it would be a good gift for every reader interested in how our governing document sometimes fails to govern in a clear and inarguable manner. For those who don't have the time or stamina to read Max Farrand's "Records of the Federal Convention of 1787," "Fault Lines" is a wonderful introduction to the topic of constitutional history.
