About the Author
The author has a serious problem- he doesn't know what he wants to do when he grows up. Meanwhile, he's done such things as wildland fire fighting, running a mountain shop, flying airplanes, shooting photos, and writing books. He's a backcountry skier, climber, figure skater, mountain biker, amateur radio operator, river runner, and sea kayaker- but the thing that really floats his boat is hiking and backpacking. No matter what else he tries, the author always come back to hiking- especially long, rough, cross-country trips in places like the Grand Canyon. Some people never learn. Very good, practical and simple but effective with the information, Could provide better maps and more detail!MAXR
It is ok, the directions could be better. I will be hitting all the hikes this summer. Adding words as needed for the minimum post.
This came quickly with no problems. Very helpful for busy people who still try to get out in nature when they can.
Be careful of using this guide - I found the maps and directions inadequate, and numerous errors. I recently took the final hike in the book, "Fourth of July Trail," and found the following problems: (1) there were several typographical errors that mislabelled towns and trails. "Talique" should be "Tajique;" "Peno Blanco Trail" should be "Cerro Blanco Trail;" "Albert's Squirrel" should be "Abert's Squirrel." Was the text prepared with an optical scanner? (2) the map was virtually worthless, because it didn't show enough detail or any topographical information. (3) the description of the hike was bare-bones and not very useful. (4) the reported distances were shorter than what my GPS recorded. Were they calculated from a map instead of the author actually walking the trail? The book is useful for suggesting a number of interesting hikes in the area, but I would advise hikers to find better maps and take what's written with a grain of salt.
